About the Doula

Melissa Douma (Owner) 
CBD, CPD, CBC, CCE

I am a married, mother of five beautiful children and one angel baby. I am a graduate of Thomas Edison State College with a degree in 'Applied Health and Science' and went on to the "International Doula Institute" where I received my certifications as a birth doula, postpartum doula, breastfeeding counselor and childbirth educator. I currently have 17 years of professional maternity experience, ranging from prenatal care, childbirth; as part of both vaginal delivery teams and cesarean sections via my position as an "OB scrub", postpartum care, breastfeeding counseling and childbirth education. I have been on staff in the maternity wards throughout my professional experience within multiple hospitals in NJ and have good rapport with the physicians, midwives and staff. I serve as a doula for parts of Northern and all of Central and Southern New Jersey. I am certified to doula for clients for; home, water, hospital and birthing center deliveries. I am on the "Certified Doula Accepted List" as part of the labor team for New Jersey medical Centers as well as birthing centers, this ensures there are no issues with being present for your delivery as far as facility protocol. 

As a Doula it is my mission to help expectant families deal with all of the changes and challenges that come with bringing a new baby into the world and their home. It is important to me that ALL families feel like they can have a doula at their side for their journey if they so choose and that is why I work with families individually to cater to their needs both financially and emotionally.

I decided to look for a Doula when I found out that I was pregnant with my second child. My first birth experience was very traumatic in many ways. I knew that I was going into this second birth with tons of fear and concerns. 

 

From the moment that I first met with Melissa I knew that she was a perfect fit for me. Her calming presence, her patience with me and her confidence in each answer to my question was everything that I wish I had in my first birth and everything I needed going into my second birth.

 

Having Melissa take the time to truly understand me and what I wanted from my birth before labor allowed me to breathe and trust during labor.

 

Leading up to the end of my pregnancy she was 100% there for me as each question came to me. She helped me prepare my “Birth Plan” as well as taught my husband and son what to expect for labor and a new baby. 

 

During labor she helped me feel safe and calm. She was there from the start to when my beautiful baby was placed on my chest. I don’t know how I would have done it without her!

 

After my baby was born she was there to support me in any way that I needed. She gave me tons of tools and support.

 

I would recommend Melissa to any expecting mother! I cannot express the difference she has made in my second birth experience in comparison to my first. She has given me a birth with such beautiful memories that I will keep with me forever.
